Geography of Mozambique

Mozambique is a country located in southeastern Africa, bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west, and Eswatini (Swaziland) and South Africa to the southwest. The country has a diverse geography that includes coastal plains, mountains, and plateaus.

Topography[edit | edit source]

Mozambique's topography is varied, with the coastal plains making up about 44% of the land area. The central region is characterized by the Zambezi River valley, which is a significant geographical feature. The western and northern regions are more mountainous, with the highest point being Mount Binga at 2,436 meters, located on the border with Zimbabwe.

Climate[edit | edit source]

The climate of Mozambique is tropical, with two main seasons: the wet season from November to March and the dry season from April to October. The coastal areas experience higher humidity and temperatures, while the inland regions have a more moderate climate.

Rivers and Lakes[edit | edit source]

Mozambique is home to several major rivers, including the Zambezi River, which is the fourth-longest river in Africa. Other significant rivers include the Limpopo River, the Rovuma River, and the Save River. The country also has several important lakes, such as Lake Malawi (also known as Lake Nyasa) and Lake Cahora Bassa, which is one of the largest artificial lakes in Africa.

Natural Resources[edit | edit source]

Mozambique is rich in natural resources, including natural gas, coal, titanium, and hydropower potential. The country's extensive coastline also provides significant opportunities for fishing and tourism.

Environmental Issues[edit | edit source]

Mozambique faces several environmental challenges, including deforestation, soil erosion, and pollution. The country is also vulnerable to natural disasters such as cyclones, floods, and droughts, which can have devastating effects on the population and economy.
