Geography of Guinea

Guinea is a country located in West Africa, bordered by Guinea-Bissau to the northwest, Senegal to the north, Mali to the northeast, Ivory Coast to the east, Liberia to the south, and Sierra Leone to the southwest. The country has a coastline along the Atlantic Ocean to the west.

Topography[edit | edit source]

Guinea's topography is characterized by four main geographic regions:

  • The Guinea Highlands (also known as the Fouta Djallon), which are located in the central part of the country and are the source of several major rivers, including the Niger River, the Gambia River, and the Senegal River.
  • The Coastal Plain, which stretches along the Atlantic coast and includes the capital city, Conakry.
  • The Sahelian region in the northeast, which is part of the larger Sahel region of Africa.
  • The Forest Region in the southeast, which is characterized by dense tropical rainforests.

Guinea has a tropical climate with a wet season from May to October and a dry season from November to April. The coastal region experiences high humidity and heavy rainfall, while the interior regions have a more temperate climate.
