The Geography of Seychelles is characterized by its unique location in the Indian Ocean, northeast of Madagascar and about 1,600 km east of Kenya. The archipelago consists of 115 islands, with a total land area of 459 square kilometers.

Topography[edit | edit source]

Seychelles is divided into two distinct groups of islands: the granitic Inner Islands and the coralline Outer Islands. The Inner Islands, including the main island of Mahé, are rocky and mountainous, with the highest point being Morne Seychellois at 905 meters. The Outer Islands are flat and consist mainly of coral atolls and reef islands.

Climate[edit | edit source]

The climate of Seychelles is tropical, with little temperature variation throughout the year. The islands experience a humid climate with an average annual temperature of around 27°C. The southeast trade winds blow from May to September, bringing cooler and drier weather, while the northwest monsoon from November to March brings warmer and wetter conditions.

Flora and Fauna[edit | edit source]

Seychelles is renowned for its rich biodiversity. The islands are home to numerous endemic species, including the Seychelles giant tortoise, the Seychelles black parrot, and the Coco de Mer palm. The marine life around the islands is equally diverse, with vibrant coral reefs and a variety of fish species.

Environmental Issues[edit | edit source]

Seychelles faces several environmental challenges, including coastal erosion, coral bleaching, and the impact of climate change. Conservation efforts are in place to protect the unique ecosystems, with several islands designated as nature reserves and marine parks.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Seychelles is heavily reliant on tourism, which is closely linked to its natural environment. Other significant sectors include fishing and agriculture. The government has also been promoting sustainable development to balance economic growth with environmental conservation.
