Kathleen Sebelius (born May 15, 1948) is an American politician who served as the 21st United States Secretary of Health and Human Services from 2009 to 2014 under President Barack Obama. Prior to her tenure as Secretary, Sebelius was the Governor of Kansas from 2003 to 2009.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Sebelius is the daughter of John J. Gilligan, who served as the Governor of Ohio. She attended Trinity Washington University and later earned a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Kansas.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Governor of Kansas[edit | edit source]
Sebelius served as the Governor of Kansas from 2003 to 2009. During her tenure, she focused on various reforms, especially in education and health care.
U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services[edit | edit source]
Appointed by President Obama, Sebelius led the Department of Health and Human Services during a critical period that saw the passage and implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), often referred to as "Obamacare". She faced significant challenges during the rollout of the HealthCare.gov website in 2013.
Post-Government Career[edit | edit source]
After resigning in 2014, Sebelius focused on private speaking engagements and served on the boards of various organizations related to health and wellness.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Sebelius is married to Gary Sebelius, a federal magistrate judge, and they have two sons. She has remained an influential voice in health policy and Democratic politics.
