Oxford–AstraZeneca
Oxford–AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine (also known as AZD1222, Vaxzevria, and Covishield) is a viral vector vaccine for prevention of COVID-19. Developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca, it is given by intramuscular injection, using as a vector the modified chimpanzee adenovirus ChAdOx1.
Development and production[edit | edit source]
The vaccine was developed by Oxford University's Oxford Vaccine Group and the Jenner Institute, in partnership with the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. The development process began in January 2020, following the sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Efficacy[edit | edit source]
Clinical trials have shown the Oxford–AstraZeneca vaccine to be effective at preventing COVID-19, significantly reducing hospitalisations and deaths from the disease. The vaccine has been shown to be effective against various COVID-19 variants.
Distribution[edit | edit source]
The vaccine has been widely distributed globally, with over a billion doses delivered as of September 2021. It is a key vaccine in the COVAX scheme, which aims to ensure equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines.
Side effects[edit | edit source]
Common side effects include pain and tenderness at the injection site, headache, fatigue, and flu-like symptoms. Rare but serious side effects include thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS).
