The HPV DNA Test is a medical procedure used to detect the presence of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in the body. This test is particularly important in identifying high-risk types of HPV that may lead to cervical cancer.
Overview[edit | edit source]
The HPV DNA test is used in combination with the Pap test to screen for cervical cancer in women aged 30 and above. It can also be used to provide additional information when a Pap test has produced abnormal results.
Procedure[edit | edit source]
The HPV DNA test is performed in a similar manner to a Pap test. A healthcare provider collects cells from the cervix using a small brush or other collection tool. The cells are then sent to a laboratory where they are examined for the presence of HPV DNA.
Importance[edit | edit source]
The HPV DNA test is an important tool in the prevention of cervical cancer. High-risk types of HPV are responsible for approximately 99% of all cervical cancers. By identifying the presence of these types of HPV, appropriate preventative measures can be taken.
Risks and Limitations[edit | edit source]
While the HPV DNA test is a valuable tool in the prevention of cervical cancer, it is not without its limitations. The test does not provide information on other sexually transmitted infections, nor does it provide a definitive diagnosis of cervical cancer. It is also possible for the test to produce false-positive results, leading to unnecessary treatment.
