Secondary amenorrhea

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Secondary amenorrhea is a medical condition characterized by the cessation of menstruation in women who have previously had regular menstrual cycles. It is defined as the absence of menstrual periods for six months or more in a woman who has previously been menstruating for at least a year.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Secondary amenorrhea can be caused by a variety of factors, including pregnancy, menopause, and certain medical conditions. Other potential causes include stress, significant weight loss or gain, and excessive exercise. Certain medications, such as contraceptives, can also lead to secondary amenorrhea.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

The diagnosis of secondary amenorrhea is typically made based on a woman's medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests. These tests may include a pregnancy test, blood tests to check hormone levels, and imaging tests such as an ultrasound or MRI to examine the reproductive organs.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

The treatment for secondary amenorrhea depends on the underlying cause. In some cases, lifestyle changes such as reducing stress, maintaining a healthy weight, and regular exercise may be recommended. In other cases, medication or surgery may be necessary.
