Tetrahydrocannabinol-C4
Tetrahydrocannabinol-C4 (THC-C4) is a cannabinoid derivative similar in structure to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component of cannabis. THC-C4 differs from THC in the length of its side chain. THC typically has a pentyl (5 carbon) chain, whereas THC-C4 contains a butyl (4 carbon) chain. This slight modification in chemical structure can influence the compound's binding affinity and activity at the CB1 receptor and CB2 receptor, which are part of the endocannabinoid system.
Chemistry[edit | edit source]
THC-C4, like THC, is a lipid-soluble compound that can be found in the resin secreted by glands of the cannabis plant. Chemically, it is classified as a phytocannabinoid. Structurally, it shares a similar molecular framework with THC but has a shorter alkyl side chain.
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
The pharmacological effects of THC-C4 are believed to be similar to those of THC, involving psychoactivity, modulation of pain, appetite stimulation, and potential anti-inflammatory effects. However, the efficacy and potency of THC-C4 can differ due to its altered chemical structure. The interaction of THC-C4 with cannabinoid receptors, primarily CB1 receptors in the central nervous system, leads to its psychoactive effects.
Effects[edit | edit source]
The psychoactive effects of THC-C4 are presumed to be less potent than those of THC due to the shorter alkyl group. This structural difference might affect the compound's ability to cross the blood-brain barrier or its binding affinity to cannabinoid receptors.
Legal Status[edit | edit source]
The legal status of THC-C4 can vary by jurisdiction, often depending on the legal status of cannabis and related cannabinoids. In regions where cannabis is illegal, THC-C4 might also be classified as a controlled substance.
Research[edit | edit source]
Research on THC-C4 is limited compared to more extensively studied cannabinoids like THC and cannabidiol (CBD). Further studies are needed to fully understand the pharmacological properties, therapeutic potential, and safety profile of THC-C4.
