Trichoepithelioma
Trichoepithelioma is a rare benign tumor that originates from the hair follicle. It is also known as Brooke-Fordyce trichoepitheliomas.
Classification[edit | edit source]
Trichoepitheliomas are classified into three types: solitary trichoepithelioma, multiple familial trichoepithelioma, and desmoplastic trichoepithelioma.
Solitary Trichoepithelioma[edit | edit source]
Solitary Trichoepithelioma is a single, small, skin-colored papule that usually appears on the face. It is not associated with any syndrome and does not have a familial tendency.
Multiple Familial Trichoepithelioma[edit | edit source]
Multiple Familial Trichoepithelioma is characterized by the presence of multiple skin-colored papules on the face. It is an autosomal dominant condition that usually appears during adolescence.
Desmoplastic Trichoepithelioma[edit | edit source]
Desmoplastic Trichoepithelioma is a rare variant that presents as a solitary, indurated plaque on the face. It is distinguished by its desmoplastic stroma on histology.
Symptoms[edit | edit source]
The main symptom of trichoepithelioma is the presence of small, skin-colored papules on the face. These papules are usually asymptomatic, but they can cause cosmetic concern.
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
The diagnosis of trichoepithelioma is usually made by biopsy and histological examination. The histology shows nests of basaloid cells with peripheral palisading and horn cysts.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
The treatment of trichoepithelioma is usually surgical excision. Other treatment options include cryotherapy, laser therapy, and radiotherapy.
