What are amaninitins?[edit | edit source]

Amaninitis are cyclic peptides extracted from carpophores of various mushroom species.

Use in molecular genetics[edit | edit source]

They are potent inhibitors of RNA polymerases in most eukaryotic species, blocking the production of mRNA and protein synthesis.

Study of transcription[edit | edit source]

These peptides are important in the study of transcription.

Types[edit | edit source]

There are 4 main types of amanitins, of which α-Amanitin is the most popular. α-Amanitin β-Amanitin γ-Amanitin ε-Amanitin

Mushroom poisoning[edit | edit source]

Alpha-amanitin is the main toxin from the species Amanitia phalloides, poisonous if ingested by humans or animals.
