- AIDS - a serious (often fatal) disease of the immune system transmitted through blood products especially by sexual contact or contaminated needles
- Abduction - (physiology) moving of a body part away from the central axis of the body; the criminal act of capturing and carrying away by force a family member; if a man's wife is abducted it is a crime against the family relationship and against the wife
- Acquittal - a judgment of not guilty
- Actus reus - activity that transgresses moral or civil law
- Adult molested as child - Adult age 18 or older who was sexually abused as a child (see definition below).
- Adult sexual assault - Sexual offense—including rape, incest, fondling, exhibitionism, or pornography—of an adult age 18 or older.
- Adultery - extramarital sex that willfully and maliciously interferes with marriage relations
- Advocate - a person who pleads for a cause or propounds an idea; a lawyer who pleads cases in court; verb speak, plead, or argue in favour of; push for something
- African - of or relating to the nations of Africa or their peoples; a native or inhabitant of Africa
- Aftermath - the consequences of an event (especially a catastrophic event); the outcome of an event especially as relative to an individual
- Aggravated assault - Unlawful, intentional causing of serious bodily injury with or without a deadly weapon, or unlawful, intentional attempting or threatening of serious bodily injury or death with a deadly or dangerous weapon.
- Alcohol - a liquor or brew containing alcohol as the active agent; any of a series of volatile hydroxyl compounds that are made from hydrocarbons by distillation

- Arraignment - a legal document calling someone to court to answer an indictment
- Arrest - the state of inactivity following an interruption; the act of apprehending (especially apprehending a criminal); verb hold back, as of a danger or an enemy; check the expansion or influence of; take into custody; attract and fix; cause to stop
- Arson - Any willful or malicious burning or attempt to burn, with or without intent to defraud, a dwelling, house, public building, motor vehicle or aircraft, or personal property of another.
- Art - the creation of beautiful or significant things; the products of human creativity; works of art collectively; a superior skill that you can learn by study and practice and observation; photographs or other visual representations in a printed publication
- Asia - the nations of the Asian continent collectively; the largest continent with 60% of the earth's population; it is joined to Europe on the west to form Eurasia; it is the site of some of the world's earliest civilizations
- Asphalt - a dark bituminous substance found in natural beds and as residue from petroleum distillation; consists mainly of hydrocarbons; mixed asphalt and crushed gravel or sand; used especially for paving but also for roofing; verb cover with tar or asphalt
- Assault - An unlawful attack by one person on another, with or without a weapon, that inflicts, or attempts or threatens to inflict, physical injury.
- Assent - agreement with a statement or proposal to do something; verb to agree or express agreement
- Assistance in filing compensation claims - Making victims aware of the availability of crime victim compensation (see definition below), helping victims complete required forms, and gathering needed documentation. May also include followup contact with the victim compensation agency on behalf of the victim.
- Augustine - (Roman Catholic Church) one of the great fathers of the early Christian church; after a dramatic conversion to Christianity he became bishop of Hippo Regius in North Africa; St. Augustine emphasized man's need for grace (354-430)
- Authorization - the act of conferring legality or sanction or formal warrant; official permission or approval; the power or right to give orders or make decisions; a document giving an official instruction or command
- Avoidance - deliberately avoiding; keeping away from or preventing from happening
- Bacchus - (classical mythology) god of wine; equivalent of Dionysus
- Beloved - dearly loved; a beloved person; used as terms of endearment
- Bestiality - sexual activity between a person and an animal; the stupid brutal quality of a beast
- Bible - a book regarded as authoritative in its field; the sacred writings of the Christian religions
- Bosnia-Herzegovina - a mountainous republic of south-central Europe; formerly part of the Ottoman Empire and then a part of Yugoslavia; voted for independence in 1992 but the mostly Serbian army of Yugoslavia refused to accept the vote and began ethnic cleansing in order to rid Bosnia of its Croats and Muslims
- Buddhism - the teaching of Buddha that life is permeated with suffering caused by desire, that suffering ceases when desire ceases, and that enlightenment obtained through right conduct and wisdom and meditation releases one from desire and suffering and rebirth; a religion represented by the many groups (especially in Asia) that profess various forms of the Buddhist doctrine and that venerate Buddha
- Bullying - noisily domineering; tending to browbeat others; the act of intimidating a weaker person to make them do something
- Bun - small rounded bread either plain or sweet
- Cairo - the capital of Egypt and the largest city in Africa; a major port just south of the Nile delta; formerly the home of the Pharaohs; a town at the southern tip of Illinois at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers
- Canada - a nation in northern North America; the French were the first Europeans to settle in mainland Canada
- Carnal knowledge - the act of sexual procreation between a man and a woman; the man's penis is inserted into the woman's vagina and excited until orgasm and ejaculation occur
- Castration - surgical removal of the testes or ovaries (usually to inhibit hormone secretion in cases of breast cancer in women or prostate cancer in men); neutering a male animal by removing the testicles; the deletion of objectionable parts from a literary work
- Cat Valium - street names for ketamine
- Catherine - empress of Russia who greatly increased the territory of the empire (1729-1796); first wife of Henry VIII; Henry's divorce from her was the initial step of the Reformation in England (1485-1536)
- Child physical abuse - Nonaccidental injury to a child by a parent or other adult that may include severe beatings, burns, strangulation, or human bites.
- Child sexual abuse - Sexual offense (see definition below) against a child by a parent or other adult.
- Child - A person under the age of 18 or as otherwise defined by state law.
- Chlamydia - coccoid rickettsia infesting birds and mammals; cause infections of eyes and lungs and genitourinary tract; a sexually transmitted infection caused by bacteria of the genus Chlamydia
- Christianity - a monotheistic system of beliefs and practices based on the Old Testament and the teachings of Jesus as embodied in the New Testament and emphasizing the role of Jesus as savior; the collective body of Christians throughout the world and history (found predominantly in Europe and the Americas and Australia)

- Compensation - something (such as money) given or received as payment or reparation (as for a service or loss or injury); (psychiatry) a defense mechanism that conceals your undesirable shortcomings by exaggerating desirable behaviors; the act of compensating for service or loss or injury
- Complainant - a person who brings an action in a court of law
- Complaint - (civil law) the first pleading of the plaintiff setting out the facts on which the claim for relief is based; an expression of grievance or resentment; (formerly) a loud cry (or repeated cries) of pain or rage or sorrow; (criminal law) a pleading describing some wrong or offense; an often persistent bodily disorder or disease; a cause for complaining

- Continuance - the act of continuing an activity without interruption; the property of enduring or continuing in time; the period of time during which something continues
- Contraception - birth control by the use of devices (diaphragm or intrauterine device or condom) or drugs or surgery
- Conviction - (criminal law) a final judgment of guilty in a criminal case and the punishment that is imposed; an unshakable belief in something without need for proof or evidence
- Counseling - something that provides direction or advice as to a decision or course of action

- Crisis counseling - In-person crisis intervention, emotional support, and guidance and counseling provided by advocates, counselors, mental health professionals, or peers. Such counseling may occur at the scene of a crime or immediately after a crime or be provided on an ongoing basis.
- Crisis hotline counseling - Operation of a 24-hour telephone service, 7 days a week, which provides counseling, guidance, emotional support, and information and referral.
- Croatia - a republic in the western Balkans in south-central Europe in the eastern Adriatic coastal area; formerly part of the Habsburg monarchy and Yugoslavia; became independent in 1991
- Cross dressing - the practice of adopting the clothes or the manner or the sexual role of the opposite sex
- DUI/DWI crash - Accident involving one or more motor vehicles in which at least one driver was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs (DUI) or was legally intoxicated (DWI) at the time of the crash.
- Darwin - provincial capital of the Northern Territory of Australia; English natural scientist who formulated a theory of evolution by natural selection (1809-1882)
- Date rape - rape in which the rapist is known to the victim (as when they are on a date together)
- Defendant - a person or institution against whom an action is brought in a court of law; the person being sued or accused
- Deliverance - recovery or preservation from loss or danger
- Deuteronomy - the fifth book of the Old Testament; contains a second statement of Mosaic law
- Diary - a personal journal (as a physical object); a daily written record of (usually personal) experiences and observations
- Dionysus - (Greek mythology) god of wine and fertility and drama; the Greek name of Bacchus
- Direct evidence - evidence (usually the testimony of a witness) directly related to the fact in dispute
- Discovery - the act of discovering something; a productive insight; something that is discovered; (law) compulsory pretrial disclosure of documents relevant to a case; enables one side in a litigation to elicit information from the other side concerning the facts in the case
- Domestic violence - Violent acts involving a current or former spouse or domestic partner.
- Domestic violence - violence or physical abuse directed toward your spouse or domestic partner; usually violence by men against women
- Double standard - an ethical or moral code that applies more strictly to one group than to another
- EKG - a graphical recording of the cardiac cycle produced by an electrocardiograph
- Ecstasy - a state of being carried away by overwhelming emotion; a state of elated bliss; street names for methylenedioxymethamphetamine

- Elder abuse - Abuse perpetrated by a caretaker on an elderly individual who depends on others for support and assistance.
- Emergency financial assistance - Cash outlays for such needs as transportation, food, clothing, and emergency housing.
- Emergency legal advocacy - Filing of temporary restraining orders, injunctions, and other protective orders, elder abuse (see definition above) petitions, and child abuse (see definition above) petitions. Does not include criminal prosecution or the employment of attorneys for such nonemergency purposes as custody disputes and civil suits.
- Ethnic cleansing - the mass expulsion and killing of one ethic or religious group in an area by another ethnic or religious group in that area

- GHB - a club drug available in liquid or powder form is taken orally (frequently combined with alcohol); used to incapacitate individuals for the commission of sexual assault and rape

- Gang violence - Criminal acts committed by a group of three or more individuals who regularly engage in criminal activity and identify themselves with a common name or sign.
- Gang-rape - verb rape (someone) successively with several attackers
- Genetic fingerprinting - the procedure of analyzing the DNA in samples of a person's body tissue or body fluid for the purpose of identification
- Genghis Khan - Mongolian emperor whose empire stretched from the Black Sea to the Pacific Ocean (1162-1227)
- Genocide - systematic killing of a racial or cultural group
- George v - King of Great Britain and Ireland and emperor of India from 1910 to 1936; gave up his German title in 1917 during World War I (1865-1936)

- Guardian - providing protective supervision; watching over or safeguarding; a person who cares for persons or property
