Satyromania

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Satyromania is a pathological condition characterized by excessive, often uncontrollable sexual desire in men. The term is derived from the Greek words "satyros", referring to the mythological companions of Dionysus known for their insatiable sexual appetite, and "mania", meaning madness or frenzy.

Symptoms and Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

The primary symptom of satyromania is an intense, obsessive preoccupation with sexual thoughts, urges, or behaviors that is difficult to control, causes distress or impairment in the individual's life, and is not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance or a general medical condition.

Diagnosis of satyromania is typically made by a mental health professional, such as a psychiatrist or psychologist, based on the individual's self-reported experiences, behavior, and mental status examination.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for satyromania typically involves a combination of psychotherapy and medication. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can help individuals learn to manage their sexual urges, reduce sexual fantasies, and improve their ability to function in daily life. Medications, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), may be used to help reduce sexual urges.
