Artocarpus heterophyllus

From WikiMD's Wellnesspedia

Artocarpus heterophyllus is a species of tree in the family Moraceae, which is native to parts of South and Southeast Asia. It is well known for its fruit, commonly known as the jackfruit, which is the largest fruit that grows on a tree.

Description[edit | edit source]

The Artocarpus heterophyllus tree can grow up to 20 meters in height, with a straight trunk and a dense, irregular canopy. The leaves are glossy and dark green, with a leathery texture. The tree produces large, oblong fruits that can weigh up to 35 kilograms. The fruit's exterior is green or yellow when ripe, and covered in numerous hard, cone-like points. The interior of the fruit contains sweet, yellow flesh and large seeds.

Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]

Artocarpus heterophyllus is native to the Indian subcontinent, and is also found in Southeast Asia, including the Philippines and Indonesia. It has been introduced to other tropical regions around the world, including parts of Africa, the Caribbean, and South America. The tree prefers a humid, tropical climate and is typically found in lowland areas.

Cultivation and uses[edit | edit source]

The jackfruit is a popular food item in many parts of the world. The sweet flesh of the fruit can be eaten fresh or used in cooking. The seeds can also be cooked and eaten. In addition to its use as a food source, the wood of the Artocarpus heterophyllus tree is used for making furniture and musical instruments.

Conservation status[edit | edit source]

While Artocarpus heterophyllus is not currently considered to be at risk of extinction, it is threatened by habitat loss in some parts of its range. Efforts are being made to conserve the species and promote sustainable farming practices.
