Zestar apple

Zestar Apple is a modern cultivar of apple that was developed by the University of Minnesota's apple breeding program. It is known for its early season harvest and balanced sweet-tart taste.

The Zestar Apple was released in 1999 by the University of Minnesota's apple breeding program, which is also responsible for other popular apple varieties such as the Honeycrisp and SweeTango. The apple was developed as part of a program to create new varieties that could withstand the cold winters of the northern United States.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

The Zestar Apple is a medium to large-sized apple with a round shape. It has a bright red color over a yellow background. The apple's flesh is crisp and juicy, with a balanced sweet-tart taste that has hints of brown sugar. Zestar Apples are known for their excellent eating quality and also for their longer storage life compared to other early season apples.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Zestar Apples are harvested in the early season, typically in late August to early September. The trees are moderately vigorous and are resistant to apple scab and fire blight. They require cross-pollination with another apple variety in order to produce fruit.

Zestar Apples are primarily used for fresh eating due to their excellent flavor and crisp texture. They can also be used in cooking and baking, and are particularly good in pies and sauces.
