Primary specialty is a term used to denote a healthcare provider's main area of training, education and work.

For example, a physician trained as an interventional cardiologist may have training in internal medicine, cardiology, and interventional cardiology. In this case, interventional cardiology will be considered primary specialty whereas cardiology and internal medicine maybe considered secondary specialties.
