The potatoes are then placed directly on the oven rack or on a baking sheet. They are baked in a preheated oven at around 400 F (200 C) for approximately 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the potatoes. The potatoes are done when they can be easily pierced with a fork.

There are several variations of baked potatoes, including twice-baked potatoes, where the potato is baked, the insides are scooped out and mixed with other ingredients, and then the mixture is placed back into the potato skins and baked again.
Another variation is the jacket potato, which is a term commonly used in the United Kingdom for baked potatoes. Jacket potatoes are often served with fillings such as tuna, baked beans, or coleslaw.

Baked potatoes are a good source of vitamin C, potassium, and dietary fiber. They are low in fat and calories, making them a healthy choice when prepared without excessive toppings.
