AIDS wasting syndrome

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

AIDS wasting syndrome is a condition that occurs in advanced stages of AIDS, characterized by significant weight loss and muscle wasting. This syndrome is a result of the body's inability to absorb nutrients due to damage to the gastrointestinal tract caused by the HIV.

Definition[edit | edit source]

AIDS wasting syndrome is defined by the CDC as involuntary weight loss of more than 10% of baseline body weight, accompanied by either chronic diarrhea for more than 30 days or chronic weakness and fever for more than 30 days, in the absence of a concurrent illness or condition other than HIV infection that would explain the findings.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The primary cause of AIDS wasting syndrome is HIV, which damages the body's immune system and interferes with the absorption of nutrients in the gastrointestinal tract. Other factors that contribute to the development of this syndrome include poor appetite, metabolic abnormalities, and the side effects of antiretroviral therapy.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The main symptom of AIDS wasting syndrome is significant weight loss, particularly loss of muscle mass. Other symptoms may include fatigue, weakness, diarrhea, and fever. In severe cases, the syndrome can lead to malnutrition and cachexia.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for AIDS wasting syndrome involves addressing the underlying HIV infection with antiretroviral therapy, improving nutrient absorption, and managing symptoms. Nutritional support, including dietary changes and supplements, can help improve nutrient intake. Medications may also be used to stimulate appetite, reduce inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, and manage symptoms.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

With appropriate treatment, the prognosis for individuals with AIDS wasting syndrome can be improved. However, the syndrome is often a sign of advanced HIV disease and can be associated with a poorer overall prognosis.
