Equilin sulfate
Equilin sulfate is a steroidal estrogen that is used in hormone replacement therapy. It is a component of conjugated estrogens (Premarin), along with several other related substances including estrone sulfate and equilenin sulfate. Equilin sulfate itself is inactive and acts as a prodrug to equilin, which is the active form.

Equilin sulfate is a steroidal compound and a sulfate ester. It is a prodrug of equilin, which means it is biologically inactive until it is metabolized in the body. The sulfate group is cleaved off in the liver by sulfatase enzymes, converting it into the active form, equilin.
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
Equilin sulfate is used in hormone replacement therapy for menopausal symptoms. It is a component of conjugated estrogens, which are a mixture of several different estrogens. Other components of conjugated estrogens include estrone sulfate and equilenin sulfate. Equilin sulfate itself is inactive and acts as a prodrug to equilin.
Side effects[edit | edit source]
Like other estrogens, equilin sulfate can have a number of side effects. These can include nausea, bloating, breast tenderness, and an increased risk of blood clots and stroke. It can also increase the risk of certain types of cancer, including breast cancer and endometrial cancer.
