Orthopaedic

From WikiMD's Wellnesspedia

Orthopaedics is a branch of medicine that focuses on the care of the musculoskeletal system. This includes the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves that allow you to move, work, and be active.

Orthopaedics was first established as a separate branch of medicine in the early 18th century by Nicolas Andry, a professor of medicine at the University of Paris. The term "orthopaedics" comes from the Greek words "orthos," which means straight, and "paideia," which means raising children. Andry chose this name because the field initially focused on the care and treatment of children with spine and limb deformities.

Today, orthopaedics encompasses a wide range of medical, surgical, and physical techniques used to treat patients of all ages with musculoskeletal problems. Orthopaedic surgeons may specialize in specific areas such as hand surgery, shoulder and elbow surgery, total joint reconstruction, pediatric orthopaedics, foot and ankle surgery, spine surgery, musculoskeletal oncology, surgical sports medicine, orthopaedic trauma, and orthopaedic rehabilitation.

Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders. They work closely with other healthcare professionals and often play a team role in the management of certain conditions.
