HOPX

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

HOPX or Homeodomain Only Protein X is a protein that in humans is encoded by the HOPX gene. It is a homeobox gene that lacks certain conserved domains typically found in other homeobox genes, hence the name "homeodomain only".

Function[edit | edit source]

HOPX is a small, highly conserved protein that plays a crucial role in cardiac development. It is expressed in the developing heart and is essential for normal cardiac morphogenesis. In addition to its role in heart development, HOPX is also involved in the regulation of cell growth and differentiation in various tissues.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Alterations in the expression of HOPX have been associated with several types of cancer, including lung cancer, gastric cancer, and colorectal cancer. In these cancers, HOPX is often silenced due to DNA methylation, leading to uncontrolled cell growth and tumor formation.

Research[edit | edit source]

Research into the function and regulation of HOPX is ongoing, with a particular focus on its role in cancer development and progression. Understanding the mechanisms by which HOPX is silenced in cancer cells could lead to new therapeutic strategies for these cancers.
