Androstenediol Sulfate[edit | edit source]

Chemical structure of Androstenediol 3-sulfate

Androstenediol sulfate is a sulfate ester of androstenediol, a naturally occurring steroid and androgen. It is a metabolite of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) and serves as a precursor to more potent androgens and estrogens.

Biochemistry[edit | edit source]

Androstenediol sulfate is formed from the sulfation of androstenediol by the enzyme sulfotransferase. This conversion occurs primarily in the adrenal glands, liver, and skin. The sulfate group increases the solubility of the molecule in blood plasma, allowing it to circulate more easily in the bloodstream.

In the body, androstenediol sulfate can be converted back to androstenediol by the action of steroid sulfatase. Androstenediol can then be further metabolized into other androgens such as testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), or into estrogens like estradiol.

Function[edit | edit source]

Androstenediol sulfate acts as a reservoir for the production of active androgens and estrogens. It plays a role in the development of secondary sexual characteristics and the regulation of reproductive function.

In addition to its role in steroidogenesis, androstenediol sulfate has been studied for its potential effects on the immune system, bone density, and cognitive function.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Abnormal levels of androstenediol sulfate can be indicative of various medical conditions. Elevated levels may be associated with adrenal hyperplasia, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and certain tumors of the adrenal gland. Conversely, low levels may be seen in adrenal insufficiency or hypopituitarism.
