The iPhone 3G is a smartphone designed and marketed by Apple Inc.. It is the second generation of the iPhone and was introduced on July 11, 2008. The iPhone 3G combined quad-band GSM and tri-band UMTS with HSDPA support, providing faster data speeds compared to its predecessor, the original iPhone.
Design and Hardware[edit | edit source]
The iPhone 3G features a 3.5-inch LCD display with a resolution of 320×480 pixels. It has a capacitive touchscreen that supports multi-touch gestures. The device is powered by a 412 MHz ARM11 CPU and includes a PowerVR MBX Lite GPU. It comes with 128 MB of DRAM and is available in 8 GB and 16 GB storage options.
The rear camera is a 2.0 megapixel sensor, and the device does not include a front camera. The iPhone 3G also features Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, and A-GPS for location services. The battery is a 1150 mAh lithium-ion unit.
Software[edit | edit source]
The iPhone 3G originally shipped with iPhone OS 2.0, which introduced the App Store and support for third-party applications. The device is upgradable to iOS 4, although some features of the newer operating system are not supported due to hardware limitations.
Reception[edit | edit source]
The iPhone 3G received positive reviews for its improved connectivity and the introduction of the App Store, which significantly expanded the device's functionality. However, it was also criticized for its battery life and the lack of certain features such as MMS and copy and paste, which were later addressed in software updates.
Discontinuation[edit | edit source]
The iPhone 3G was discontinued on June 7, 2010, following the announcement of its successor, the iPhone 3GS. Despite its discontinuation, the iPhone 3G played a significant role in popularizing smartphones and mobile applications.
