IPhone 3G and 3G S backs

iPhone 3GS is a smartphone that was designed and marketed by Apple Inc. It is the third generation iPhone, succeeding the iPhone 3G, and was introduced on June 8, 2009, at the WWDC 2009 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, United States. The "S" in iPhone 3GS stands for Speed, highlighting its improved performance over its predecessor. The device was released in the United States, Canada, and six European countries on June 19, 2009, and in Australia and Japan in July 2009.

Features[edit | edit source]

The iPhone 3GS includes both hardware and software changes from the previous model. It was available in 8, 16, or 32 GB storage options and introduced a more powerful 600 MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor, which significantly improved performance. The device also featured an upgraded 3-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, auto white balance, and auto macro, and was the first iPhone to offer video recording capabilities at 480p resolution.

iOS 3.0 was pre-installed on the iPhone 3GS, introducing over 100 new features compared to its predecessor, including Cut, Copy, and Paste, MMS support, and Spotlight Search. It also introduced the App Store (software), which allowed users to browse and download apps directly to their device. The iPhone 3GS was the first iPhone to support Voice Control, allowing users to make phone calls and control music playback with voice commands.

Design[edit | edit source]

The iPhone 3GS maintained the same design as the iPhone 3G, featuring a plastic back with metal buttons and a 3.5-inch display with a resolution of 320x480 pixels. However, it introduced a new oleophobic coating on the screen to help reduce fingerprints.

Reception[edit | edit source]

The iPhone 3GS received positive reviews from critics, who praised its improved performance and video recording capabilities. However, some criticized it for its lack of significant design changes from the iPhone 3G. Despite this, the iPhone 3GS was a commercial success, selling over one million units in its first weekend.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The iPhone 3GS was succeeded by the iPhone 4 in June 2010. It continued to receive iOS updates until iOS 6.1.6, making it one of the longest-supported iPhones in terms of software updates. The device was officially discontinued in September 2012, but it left a lasting legacy as a significant step forward in the evolution of the iPhone, particularly in terms of performance and video recording capabilities.
