Hematological

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Hematological refers to the medical science that involves the study and treatment of blood, blood-forming organs, and blood diseases. The field includes the diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of blood diseases that affect the production of blood and its components, such as blood cells, hemoglobin, blood proteins, and the mechanism of coagulation.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The hematological system includes the blood, bone marrow, and the organs that use blood cells to perform their functions. The blood is composed of red and white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. Hematologists study these components and the diseases that affect them.

Hematological Diseases[edit | edit source]

Hematological diseases are disorders which primarily affect the blood & blood-forming organs. Hematological diseases can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Common hematological diseases include anemia, leukemia, myelofibrosis, and hemophilia.

Anemia[edit | edit source]

Anemia is a condition in which the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells to provide oxygen to body tissues. There are many types of anemia, each with its own cause.

Leukemia[edit | edit source]

Leukemia is a group of blood cancers that usually begin in the bone marrow and result in high numbers of abnormal white blood cells.

Myelofibrosis[edit | edit source]

Myelofibrosis is a rare bone marrow cancer that disrupts the body's normal production of blood cells.

Hemophilia[edit | edit source]

Hemophilia is a rare disorder in which your blood doesn't clot normally because it lacks sufficient blood-clotting proteins (clotting factors).

Hematological Tests[edit | edit source]

Hematological tests can help diagnose anemia, infection, hemophilia, blood-clotting disorders, and leukemia. These tests usually require a small amount of blood to be drawn from the patient.
