- This medicine is used for the treatment of cold sores/fever blisters on the face or lips
- This medicine shortens healing time and duration of symptoms:
tingling, pain, burning, and/or itching
How does this medicine work?[edit | edit source]
- Docosanol is thought to act by inhibiting the fusion of the human host cell with the viral envelope of the herpes virus, thus preventing its replication.
Who Should Not Use this medicine ?[edit | edit source]
This medicine cannot be used in:
- People who are allergic to any ingredient in this product
Is this medicine FDA approved?[edit | edit source]
- More recently, docosanol has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a pharmaceutical antiviral agent for reducing the duration of cold sores caused by the herpes simplex virus in the OTC medication Abreva.
How should this medicine be used?[edit | edit source]
- wash hands before and after applying cream
- apply to affected area on the face or lips at the first sign of cold sore/fever blister (tingle).
- early treatment ensures the best results
- rub in gently but completely
- use 5 times a day until healed

What side effects can this medication cause?[edit | edit source]
Common possible side effects of this medicine include: This product may cause a severe allergic reaction. Symptoms may include:
- hives
- facial swelling
- wheezing/difficulty breathing
- shock
- rash
What special precautions should I follow?[edit | edit source]
- apply only to the affected areas
- do not use in or near the eyes
- avoid applying directly inside your mouth
- do not share this product with anyone. This may spread the infection.

- If an allergic reaction occurs, stop use and seek medical help right away.
Can this medicine be used in pregnancy?[edit | edit source]
This topical has not been yet tested if it is safe to be used by pregnant women.
Can this medicine be used in children?[edit | edit source]
- Docosanol has not been specifically approved for treatment of children under 12.
- Adults and children 12 years and over can use Docosanol Cream.

- store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F)
- do not freeze
- keep out of reach of children
