Gallocatechin-(4-8)-catechin is a type of flavan-3-ol, a class of flavonoids, which are a type of phenolic compound. It is a specific type of tannin and is found in a variety of plants, including tea and cocoa.

Structure and Properties[edit | edit source]

Gallocatechin-(4-8)-catechin is a dimer of catechin and gallocatechin, linked by a carbon-carbon bond between the 4' position of the gallocatechin unit and the 8 position of the catechin unit. This type of linkage is known as a B-type linkage.

The compound is a polyphenol, meaning it contains multiple phenol groups. These groups can act as antioxidants, neutralizing harmful free radicals in the body.

Gallocatechin-(4-8)-catechin has been studied for its potential health benefits. Like other flavan-3-ols, it has been found to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties. It may also have cardiovascular benefits, such as reducing blood pressure and improving cholesterol levels.

The primary dietary sources of gallocatechin-(4-8)-catechin are tea and cocoa. It is found in particularly high amounts in green tea, but can also be found in black tea and oolong tea. Cocoa and chocolate also contain significant amounts of this compound.
