Methotrexate sodium

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Methotrexate Sodium is a chemotherapy agent and immune system suppressant. It is used in the treatment of cancer, autoimmune diseases, and for the induction of medical abortions.

History[edit | edit source]

Methotrexate Sodium was first synthesized in the 1940s by a team of researchers at the Lederle Laboratories. It was initially used as a treatment for leukemia and later found to be effective in treating other types of cancer and autoimmune diseases.

Medical Uses[edit | edit source]

Methotrexate Sodium is used in the treatment of a variety of medical conditions. These include certain types of cancer, such as breast cancer, lung cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, and osteosarcoma. It is also used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and Crohn's disease. In addition, it is used for the induction of medical abortions.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Methotrexate Sodium works by inhibiting the metabolism of folic acid. This inhibition interferes with the growth of certain cells in the body, particularly those that are rapidly dividing, such as cancer cells.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Methotrexate Sodium include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fatigue. More serious side effects can include liver damage, lung damage, bone marrow suppression, and severe allergic reactions.

Contraindications[edit | edit source]

Methotrexate Sodium is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to methotrexate, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and patients with severe renal impairment.
