Coco is a 2017 American computer-animated film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The film is directed by Lee Unkrich and co-directed by Adrian Molina. The story follows a 12-year-old boy named Miguel Rivera who is accidentally transported to the Land of the Dead, where he seeks the help of his deceased musician great-great-grandfather to return him to his family among the living and reverse his family's ban on music.
Plot[edit | edit source]
The film begins in the small town of Santa Cecilia, Mexico, where 12-year-old Miguel Rivera dreams of becoming a musician, despite his family's generations-old ban on music. Miguel idolizes the late Ernesto de la Cruz, a famous musician, and secretly practices guitar in a hidden attic.
On Día de los Muertos, Miguel accidentally damages a photo of his great-great-grandmother Imelda Rivera and discovers a hidden part of the photo showing her with a guitar. Believing that Ernesto de la Cruz is his great-great-grandfather, Miguel sneaks into Ernesto's mausoleum to borrow his guitar and participate in a talent show. However, upon strumming the guitar, Miguel becomes invisible to the living and can see his deceased relatives.
Miguel learns that he is in the Land of the Dead and meets his deceased family members, including Imelda. They explain that he must receive a blessing from a family member to return to the Land of the Living. Imelda offers her blessing on the condition that he gives up music, but Miguel refuses and seeks Ernesto's blessing instead.
With the help of a charming trickster named Héctor Rivera, Miguel embarks on a journey to find Ernesto. Along the way, Miguel learns the truth about his family history and the importance of remembering and honoring one's ancestors.

Production[edit | edit source]
The concept for Coco was inspired by the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos. Director Lee Unkrich first pitched the idea to Pixar in 2010. The film's development included extensive research trips to Mexico to understand the culture and traditions associated with the holiday. The filmmakers worked closely with cultural consultants to ensure an authentic representation of Mexican customs and traditions.
Music[edit | edit source]
The film's score was composed by Michael Giacchino, with original songs written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. The song "Remember Me" plays a significant role in the film and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Coco received widespread critical acclaim for its animation, voice acting, music, and cultural representation. It won several awards, including two Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song ("Remember Me"). The film was also a commercial success, grossing over $807 million worldwide.
