Hydrocodone/ibuprofen is a combination medication used to relieve moderate to severe pain. It combines the opioid analgesic hydrocodone with the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) ibuprofen. This combination is effective in managing pain by utilizing the synergistic effects of both components.

Hydrocodone is a semi-synthetic opioid derived from codeine. It acts primarily on the central nervous system by binding to the mu-opioid receptor, which leads to analgesia, sedation, and euphoria. Hydrocodone is metabolized in the liver by the cytochrome P450 enzyme system, particularly CYP2D6 and CYP3A4, into active metabolites such as hydromorphone.
Ibuprofen[edit | edit source]
Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX), which is involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are mediators of inflammation and pain. By reducing their production, ibuprofen decreases inflammation, pain, and fever.

Hydrocodone/ibuprofen is indicated for the short-term management of acute pain that is severe enough to require an opioid analgesic and for which alternative treatments are inadequate. It is often prescribed for conditions such as postoperative pain, injury-related pain, and severe musculoskeletal pain.
