DepoDur

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

DepoDur is a brand name for morphine sulfate, an opioid medication used to treat severe pain. It is a long-acting formulation that is administered by epidural injection.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

DepoDur is a liposome-encapsulated form of morphine sulfate. The liposomes allow for a slow release of the medication, providing pain relief for up to 48 hours. Morphine works by binding to mu-opioid receptors in the brain, spinal cord, and other areas of the body. This binding action inhibits the transmission of pain signals and produces a feeling of euphoria.

Indications[edit | edit source]

DepoDur is indicated for the relief of pain following major surgery. It is particularly useful in procedures such as hip arthroplasty and cesarean section, where postoperative pain can be severe.

Contraindications[edit | edit source]

DepoDur is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to morphine or other opioids. It should not be used in patients with respiratory depression, severe asthma, or paralytic ileus. It is also contraindicated in patients who have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) within the last 14 days.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of DepoDur include nausea, vomiting, constipation, and pruritus. More serious side effects can include respiratory depression, hypotension, and addiction.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

DepoDur can interact with other medications, including other opioids, sedatives, and certain antidepressants. These interactions can increase the risk of side effects and should be monitored closely.
