Tenormin

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Tenormin is a medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as beta blockers. It is the brand name for the generic drug atenolol. Tenormin is primarily used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina (chest pain). It can also be used to prevent myocardial infarction (heart attack) and to treat irregular heartbeats.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Tenormin is used to treat a variety of cardiovascular conditions. It is most commonly prescribed for hypertension and angina, but it can also be used to prevent heart attacks in people who have already had one. In addition, it can be used to treat or prevent arrhythmia (irregular heartbeats).

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Tenormin works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals in your body, such as epinephrine, on the heart and blood vessels. This effect reduces heart rate, blood pressure, and strain on the heart.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Tenormin include fatigue, dizziness, and slow heartbeat. Less common side effects can include shortness of breath, swelling of the hands or feet, and depression. If any of these side effects persist or worsen, patients are advised to contact their doctor immediately.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Before taking Tenormin, patients should inform their doctor if they have a history of asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, heart failure, or other heart problems. Tenormin should be used with caution in patients with diabetes, as it can mask certain symptoms of low blood sugar.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

Tenormin can interact with a variety of other medications, including calcium channel blockers, digoxin, and certain antidepressants. Patients should inform their doctor of all medications they are currently taking before starting Tenormin.
