Overview[edit | edit source]
The United States, officially known as the United States of America (USA), is a federal republic composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major self-governing territories, and various possessions. It is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many countries.
History[edit | edit source]
The history of the United States began with the arrival of Indigenous peoples before 15,000 BC. Numerous cultures formed, and many disappeared before 1500. The arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492 started the European colonization of the Americas. Most colonies were formed after 1600, and the early records and writings of John Winthrop make the United States the first nation whose most distant origins are fully recorded.
Geography[edit | edit source]
The United States is the world's third or fourth largest nation by total area. The country is situated in central North America with Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. The state of Alaska is in the northwest corner of North America, bordered by Canada to the east and across the Bering Strait from Russia to the west. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific Ocean.
Politics[edit | edit source]
The United States is a federal republic and a representative democracy with three separate branches of government, including a bicameral legislature. It is a founding member of the United Nations, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Organization of American States, NATO, and other international organizations.
Culture[edit | edit source]
American culture is a melting pot of different cultures, primarily Western, but influenced by Native American, African, Asian, Polynesian, and Latin American cultures. The United States has its own unique social and cultural characteristics, such as dialect, music, arts, social habits, cuisine, and folklore.
