Idli is a savory rice cake, a type of Indian food item popular in South India.

Breakfast item[edit | edit source]

"Idli" is a common breakfast item in India, particularly popular in South India and to some extent in parts of Sri Lanka.

Fermented food[edit | edit source]

It is a naturally fermented steamed food prep>ared from rice and Indian black gram cotyledons in various proportions. The fermentation is thought increase the quality and amount of protein as shown in a study.

Weaning food for babies[edit | edit source]

"Idli" is used as a weaning food in many families.

Soft diet in hospitals[edit | edit source]

It is used as a main dish in soft diets in South Indian Hospitals because of its soft texture.

Other legumes[edit | edit source]

Legumes such as soy beans, white beans and dehulled black beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) can be substituted for Indian black gram in the preparation of "idli".

Here is a plate of Idli for you. Idli is a south Indian food which became popular throughout India over time. Generally Idli is served with sambar and chutney. The earliest mention of Idli can be found in a writing called Vaddaradhane by Shivakotiacharya written in around 920 A.D.
