Piperacillin-Tazobactam

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Piperacillin-Tazobactam is a combination drug used in the treatment of various bacterial infections. It is a combination of two antibiotics, piperacillin and tazobactam, which work together to inhibit the growth of bacteria.

Composition[edit | edit source]

Piperacillin is a broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, leading to bacterial cell death. Tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that prevents the breakdown of piperacillin, thereby enhancing its effectiveness.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Piperacillin-Tazobactam is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including pneumonia, skin infections, urinary tract infections, and intra-abdominal infections. It is also used in the treatment of sepsis and other serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Piperacillin-Tazobactam include nausea, diarrhea, and skin rash. Serious side effects may include allergic reactions, liver problems, and blood disorders.

Dosage[edit | edit source]

The dosage of Piperacillin-Tazobactam depends on the type and severity of the infection, the patient's age and weight, and the patient's kidney function. It is usually administered intravenously in a hospital setting.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

Piperacillin-Tazobactam may interact with other medications, including certain blood thinners, probenecid, and methotrexate. It is important to inform the healthcare provider of all medications being taken to avoid potential interactions.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Patients with a history of allergy to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics should not use Piperacillin-Tazobactam. It should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease, liver disease, or a history of bleeding disorders.
