Estradiol hemihydrate

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Estradiol hemihydrate is a form of estradiol, a naturally occurring estrogen hormone. It is used in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and for the treatment of certain menopausal symptoms.

Chemical Structure[edit | edit source]

Estradiol hemihydrate is a crystalline form of estradiol that includes one molecule of water for every two molecules of estradiol. The term "hemihydrate" refers to this 2:1 ratio of estradiol to water.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Estradiol hemihydrate is a potent estrogen, binding to and activating the estrogen receptor. This leads to a range of effects in the body, including the development and maintenance of female secondary sexual characteristics, regulation of the menstrual cycle, and effects on bone density.

Clinical Use[edit | edit source]

Estradiol hemihydrate is used in hormone replacement therapy to treat symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness. It is also used in the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, and in feminizing hormone therapy for transgender women.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

As with other forms of estradiol, estradiol hemihydrate can have a range of side effects. These can include nausea, bloating, breast tenderness, and an increased risk of certain types of cancer. It is important for individuals taking estradiol hemihydrate to be monitored by a healthcare provider.
