5-Methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine
5-Methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT) is a psychedelic of the tryptamine class. It is found in a wide variety of plant species, and at least one toad species, the Sonora Desert toad.
Chemistry[edit | edit source]
5-MeO-DMT is a methoxy derivative of DMT. Its chemical name is 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine. It belongs to the tryptamine class of compounds, which are structurally similar to the neurotransmitter serotonin.
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
5-MeO-DMT acts as a serotonin receptor agonist. It has a high affinity for the 5-HT2A and 5-HT1A receptors. The psychoactive effects of 5-MeO-DMT are believed to come from its efficacy at the 5-HT2A receptor as a partial agonist.
Effects[edit | edit source]
The effects of 5-MeO-DMT are usually felt within a few minutes of ingestion and are typically short-lived, lasting less than an hour. Users often report intense visual hallucinations, a sense of euphoria, and a feeling of being connected to everything.
Legal Status[edit | edit source]
The legal status of 5-MeO-DMT varies by country. In the United States, it is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance, making it illegal to manufacture, buy, possess, or distribute without a license.
