Human diseases and disorders[edit | edit source]
Human diseases are conditions that affect the normal functioning of the body and cause symptoms that can range from mild to severe. There are many different types of diseases that can affect humans, and they can be caused by a variety of factors, including infections, genetics, environmental factors, and lifestyle choices.
Common diseases[edit | edit source]
Some of the most common human diseases include:
Heart disease: Heart disease is a term used to describe a range of conditions that affect the heart, including coronary artery disease, heart failure, and arrhythmias. It is the leading cause of death worldwide.
Cancer: Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. There are many different types of cancer, including breast cancer, lung cancer, and colon cancer.
Diabetes: Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when the body is unable to properly regulate blood sugar levels. There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2.
Respiratory infections: Respiratory infections, such as the common cold and flu, are caused by viruses and can affect the nose, throat, and lungs. They are among the most common human diseases.
Depression: Depression is a mental health disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of interest or pleasure in activities. It is a leading cause of disability worldwide.
Hypertension: Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is consistently too high. It can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease.
Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that occurs when the cartilage that cushions the bones in a joint wears down over time. It is a common cause of joint pain and stiffness.
Stroke: A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is disrupted, leading to brain damage. It is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): COPD is a group of lung conditions that cause breathing difficulties. It is usually caused by smoking and can include conditions such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
Influenza: Influenza, or the flu, is a viral infection that affects the respiratory system. It is a common cause of illness and can lead to serious complications, particularly in older adults, young children, and people with certain medical conditions.
Prevention[edit | edit source]
It is important to be aware of the risks for different diseases and to take steps to prevent them when possible. This may involve getting regular check-ups and screenings, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, avoiding risky behaviors, and following recommended preventive measures, such as getting vaccinated. If you are experiencing symptoms that may be related to a disease, it is important to see a healthcare professional for a proper evaluation and treatment.
Cause of death[edit | edit source]
Unintentional injury, cancer, suicide, heart disease, homicide, and chronic liver disease were the leading causes of death for persons aged 25–44. Cancer and heart disease were the top two causes of death among persons aged 45–64 in 2016, followed by unintentional injuries, chronic lower respiratory disease(CLRD), chronic liver disease and cirrhosis, diabetes, and stroke. Heart disease and cancer were the top two causes of death among persons aged 65 and over.
