A synthetic psychedelic compound

2C-T-12 is a synthetic psychedelic compound belonging to the 2C family of phenethylamines. It was first synthesized by the chemist Alexander Shulgin and is documented in his book PiHKAL (Phenethylamines I Have Known And Loved).

Chemical Structure and Properties[edit | edit source]

2C-T-12 is chemically known as 2-[4-(n-Propylthio)-2,5-dimethoxyphenyl]ethanamine. It is a member of the 2C-T series, which are characterized by the presence of a thioether group attached to the phenyl ring. The molecular formula of 2C-T-12 is C13H21NO2S, and it has a molecular weight of 255.37 g/mol.

The structure of 2C-T-12 includes a phenethylamine backbone with methoxy groups at the 2 and 5 positions of the phenyl ring, and a propylthio group at the 4 position. This structural configuration is responsible for its psychoactive properties.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

2C-T-12 acts primarily as a serotonin receptor agonist, particularly at the 5-HT2A receptor, which is believed to be responsible for its psychedelic effects. The compound's interaction with these receptors leads to alterations in perception, mood, and cognition.

The onset of effects typically occurs within 1 to 2 hours after oral administration, with the duration of effects lasting approximately 8 to 12 hours. Users report a range of effects including visual and auditory hallucinations, altered thought processes, and changes in emotional state.

Effects and Experience[edit | edit source]

The subjective effects of 2C-T-12 can vary widely among users, but common experiences include:

  • Visual Distortions: Users often report enhanced colors, patterns, and visual hallucinations.
  • Euphoria: A sense of well-being and happiness is frequently noted.
  • Altered Perception of Time: Time may appear to slow down or speed up.
  • Introspection: Users may experience deep personal insights and reflections.

Safety and Toxicity[edit | edit source]

The safety profile of 2C-T-12 is not well-established due to limited research. As with other psychedelics, there is a potential for psychological distress, including anxiety and paranoia, particularly in individuals with a predisposition to mental health disorders.

There is no known lethal dose for 2C-T-12, but caution is advised due to the lack of comprehensive toxicological data. Users should be aware of the potential for adverse reactions and the importance of a safe and controlled environment when using this substance.

Legal Status[edit | edit source]

2C-T-12 is not specifically scheduled under the United Nations Convention on Psychotropic Substances, but its legal status may vary by country. In some jurisdictions, it may be considered an analogue of other controlled substances and thus subject to regulation under analogue laws.
